Individual Consultations

The dietitians at MME Dietitians recognise that everyone is different and what is suitable for one person may not be suitable for the next, so the dietitians spend time working with each of their clients in order to develop eating plans and to provide advice that best suit each person’s own needs and preferences.

Individual consultations  aim to identify your specific dietary, lifestyle and nutritional needs. The dietitians will help you to achieve your goals by providing a personalised eating plan, useful nutrition tools, simplifying nutrition ‘noise’ and working on behaviour change.

Skype and telephonic consultations are available for people who cannot come into the practice.

We provide nutrition advice and eating plans for a range of ages and health conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Weight management (weight loss, weight gain or weight maintenance)
  • Sports nutrition
  • Insulin resistance syndrome
  • Raised cholesterol levels
  • Raised blood pressure
  • Raised cholesterol

 The consultation process:

The First Consultation

The initial consultation is divided into two appointments, both of which are required for the provision of a full meal plan. The first consultation takes 1 hour. During this appointment, the dietitian completes a comprehensive nutritional assessment, in order to obtain sufficient information to develop an individualised meal plan and establish key concerns and reasons for seeing the dietitian. This includes:

  • Medical and family history
  • Detailed diet history looking at food preferences, food patterns, food likes and dislikes, food allergies and intolerances.
  • Weight and height measurements and waist circumference
  • Vitamin and mineral supplement review
  • The dietitian will consult any existing blood tests that have been performed. If there is a need for more tests, the dietitian can order them.

Following the assessment, your dietitian will provide individualised nutrition education.  Nutrition-related concerns are discussed, any questions about conditions or symptoms are answered and an overview of the recommended nutrition principles and guidelines is provided. It is an interactive process and questions are encouraged for a deeper understanding and to correct any misconceptions.

The Second Consultation

The second consultation is 40 minutes in duration.  The dietitian will present the individualised meal plan and guidelines she has compiled and explain how it can be applied to day to day living and implemented for optimal results. Suitable recipes and further education will also be provided.

Follow Up Consultations

Research has shown that people who attend regular follow up sessions are more successful in weight and health management than those who do not. Follow-up appointments allow for the monitoring and evaluation of diet adjustments and progress. Successful strategies are identified and areas of difficulty are addressed to motivate behaviour change that will faciliate the achievement of goals. The number of follow-up appointments and time between appointments depend on each individual. The frequency of your follow up consultation is variable depending on your needs; your dietitian will discuss this with you.

12-Week Weight Loss Program:

MME Dietitians offer 8 and 12-week weight loss programs for groups of 3-8 people. Sessions take place every 2 weeks and clients will be provided with a meal plan and tasty and nutritious recipes along with nutrition education and skills development to achieve healthy and sustainable weight loss.

Discovery Vitality Points:

As of January 2017, there is no longer a ‘Vitality Nutrition Consultation’.  However, Discovery Vitality Members can ear 1000 Vitality Points once off for any consultation with a dietitian registered with the HPCSA, that is 30 minutes or longer in duration.

Should existing clients wish to earn 1000 Vitality points once off for 2017 for one of their follow up appointments, please advise us when booking so that we can book you for 40 minutes for that particular appointment, rather than the usual 20 minute appointment.

Vitality members can still benefit from the dietitian’s consultation without having to book for a full 60 minute consultation (that entails a personalised meal plan with nutrition advice). 1000 Vitality points can be secured with a 40 minute consultation where the dietitian will work with you to set specific and achievable goals to help you to improve your health. Measurements of your weight, height and waist circumference will also be taken. This costs R340.

Discovery have launched their Vitality Weight Loss Rewards (WLR) Progam. The Vitality WLR is a 12-week weight-loss journey that aims to help you lose weight in short, manageable cycles until you reach a healthier weight. Vitality members who qualify for this program can earn Vitality points and rewards for participating and reaching your goals.  MME Dietitians can assist you with your verified weigh-ins and providing you with meal plans, dietary guidance and motivation to help you reach your goals, through one on one consultations or our 12-week group weight loss progam.  Please contact us directly should you wish to find out more.

 Body composition analysis:

Body composition can be assessed using bioelectrical impedence to determine body fat percentage. The is a separate assessment at an additional cost and takes approximately 10 minutes. It is most accurate when tested in the morning, before eating and training.

DNA Tests – Gene Based Personalised Diets:

The dietitians at MME Dietitians have completed the Foundations in Nutrigenomics Course which allows them to provide personalised diet and lifestyle recommendations based on results from DNA tests, to optimise your health and wellness. DNA tests are offered by the dietitians through DNAlysis.
